Safety Tips When Using PTO Wood Chippers

Operating a PTO wood chipper isn’t just about getting the job done—it’s about getting it done safely. Whether you're a seasoned farmer or a first-time tractor owner, understanding how to operate a 3-point wood chipper correctly can prevent serious injuries and extend the life of your equipment.

These machines are incredibly powerful, and even a brief lapse in safety can result in costly or dangerous consequences. In this article, we break down essential safety practices that every operator should follow when using a PTO-powered or 3-point hitch wood chipper.

Wear the Right Safety Gear

Before even starting the chipper, every operator should be equipped with proper PPE (personal protective equipment). At a minimum, this includes:

Safety glasses or goggles
Hearing protection
Work gloves
Steel-toe boots
Close-fitting clothing

Loose sleeves or baggy pants can get caught in the infeed mechanism, posing a serious risk. For particularly dry or splinter-prone material, a full-face shield is also a worthwhile investment.

Inspect Before You Operate

Before turning on the PTO, take a few minutes to walk around the machine and visually inspect all critical components. Make sure the PTO shaft is properly connected and shielded, the flywheel spins freely, and the chipper blades are sharp and securely mounted.

Also verify that your three-point wood chipper is correctly attached to your tractor, with all hitch pins and safety chains in place. Don’t overlook the terrain either—operating on soft or sloped ground can cause the chipper to shift during use. A stable, level surface is always best.

Use Proper Feeding Technique

How you feed branches into the chipper can make a big difference in both safety and efficiency. Always insert material butt-end first—the thickest end—so the chipper can naturally grab and pull it in.

Never use your hands to push material into the feed chute, especially if your unit lacks hydraulic feed. Use a push stick or another branch to guide any stuck debris. And always stand to the side of the infeed chute—never directly behind it—so you can avoid kickback from stray material.

Avoid leaning over the chipper at any point while it’s running. Situational awareness is key.

Handling Shutdowns and Jams Safely

Chipper jams are inevitable from time to time—but clearing them must always be done correctly.

If your machine becomes clogged or stops feeding material:

Disengage the PTO.
Turn off the tractor’s engine.
Remove the ignition key before attempting any clearing or maintenance.

Many of PTO chippers include built-in safety guards, emergency stop levers, and shear bolts to protect the operator and equipment. These safety features are designed to reduce injury risks and prevent machine damage in case of a jam or overload.

Read and Follow the Operator’s Manual

Each PTO chipper model has unique components, safety mechanisms, and maintenance requirements. That’s why it’s essential to read the manual before your first use. Understanding how to engage the PTO properly, how the safety clutch functions, and how frequently to check and sharpen blades will keep your equipment running smoothly—and keep you protected.

While the fundamentals cover most situations, there are a few more best practices that can make your work safer and more efficient:

Keep bystanders, pets, and children at least 50 feet away during operation.
Never bypass or disable built-in safety features.
Keep the work area clear—don’t allow leaves, branches, or debris to build up near the chipper.
Run the machine at the correct RPM based on the manufacturer’s specifications. Running too slow or too fast can reduce efficiency and potentially damage the flywheel.
